Hari Raya Puasa
To my Muslim friends out there, Hari Raya Puasa is coming real soon! This year, this festive celebration is dated on the 6 July 2016.
I think that whether you are Muslim or not, everyone can celebrate Hari Raya Puasa in one way or another. Afterall, Singapore is a multiracial society where we are taught to accept each other's race and religion. This is one thing I love about being Singaporean.
We can all start by celebrating each other's festive holidays. How fun is that?! I have always wanted to visit my friends' houses, try their festive goodies and food, engage with everyone and of course, be in their outfits (Baju Kurung, Hijabs etc.) for the occasion! Not sure if this sounds cliché or not but this is probably one of my things-to-do from my bucketlist – I had love to understand the different cultures.
Based on my research, Hari Raya Puasa is the celebration at the end of the fasting month (a.k.a Ramadan). Ramadan is the demonstration of self-restraint which symbolises purification and renewal. It is also a time of forgiveness. In Malay, Hari Raya means the 'grand day of rejoicing'. For Hari Raya Pausa, people will clean and decorate their houses and put on new clothes in preparation for the festival.
The occasion outfit for men is often the Baju Melayu (a loose shirt with trousers) with kain samping (a short sarong). The women, on the other hand, wear the Baju Kurung. Families usually dress in the same colour to represent unity.
For this piece, I like how basic it is, especially the maroon colour and the jewels paired onto the outfit.
The colour of this Baju Kurung is a very interesting tint of mint green. The jewels are very unique and beautiful! Not forgetting, the wave of cloth on the bottom of the hip area.
Of course, other than the modern looking Baju Kurungs, the traditional ones are also pretty and decent! Notice how both the designs above are very detailed! The material for the Baju Kurung on the left is slightly different from the rest, it has this silk-like material that is reflective and bright. As for the piece on the right, I like how there is an ombre shade of blue that darkens to the hip or waist line and then brightens again to the feet.
Hopefully, now that I have shown you some pictures of these occasion outfits, you will have a better idea or inspiration on what to wear for Hari Raya! Well, for me, I am secretly anticipating that my friends will invite me over to their house to spend Hari Raya!
