The Big Q: "How is it like living in a foreign country so far?"

The weather here is NOT hot, that's for sure. Germany is currently in the Autumn season but I am already experiencing the coldness and breezy winds similar to that of the temperature during the start of the Winter period. The temperatures here ranges between 11 to 21 degree celcius. The cold is a little unbearable in the morning and at night. But it feels good to be in a different environment!
My routine involves grocery shopping (yay) and I kinda love doing grocery shopping. I enjoy being in the supermarket, slowly choosing the necessary groceries required to prepare the next meal that I intend to cook. It's almost like a leisure activity to me because it feels like I took a really short time to shop but once I step out of the supermarket, I realise that I've took up quite a bit of time. Hashtag house wife material HAHA.
Most of my expenses are spent on food, whether it is eating out at restaurants/cafés or groceries for cooking. And yes, food over here is expensive, even the groceries. Basically, everything in Euros is not cheap. If you think that transportation in Singapore is expensive, travelling from place to place over here is even worse. There aren't many concessions available, even so transportation is still pricey with concessions. For instance, the weekly concession for buses here cost €21.20 which is around SGD$35.
The towns are beautiful and peaceful. It's so scenic, as if I am living in a huge piece of artwork. The Germans are very friendly and approachable. You can just smile at a stranger while walking on the streets without having to worry about him/her not smiling back. It's like a norm to smile and greet a stranger or ask someone how they are. Even cashiers in supermarkets greet 'hello' chirpily to us, customers. I like this part of the European culture a lot. It's not a dead world in here where everybody simply go about leading their own lives. People here lend a helping hand to those in need (not just the elderly but those who need a little help, a real life example I experienced was receiving help in the carrying of my humongous luggage).
Nature plays a big role in the beauty of the country. I can find all kinds of flowers that are still blooming brightly (as it is still Autumn), even my favourite sunflowers, along the pavements! Nature just makes everything more appealing and I can't wait to find more of those huge dandelions (as mentioned in my previous post "Germany-bound").
All in all, I've been experiencing, understanding, appreciating and learning the culture, norms and traditions in Europe (or whichever countries I'll be going). It is gonna be a real eye-opener for me and I won't let this opportunity slip past just like that. I'm gonna make the entire time worthwhile.
Day 15
It is now
LOCAL TIME (+49): Mon 16 Sep || 6:15PM
Yep that's right, it is still extremely bright here in Germany unlike Singapore. Just done eating and washing the dishes. This was what I whipped up!
Mix of Western and Asian food! It's my first attempt in cooking both dishes (3 dishes in fact), came up with my own recipes. Above are Carbonara Fusilli with Garlic Mushrooms and Ham + Long Beans and Onions. I enjoyed cooking these dishes today (impromptu) and it may sound really arrogant but they tasted really good, especially the long beans. I was so pleased with the outcome of the dishes!!! *gives self 2 rounds of applause*
Personally, as a newbie cook, I feel that the most important factor to whipping up a delicious meal is to cook with passion, love and common sense. If you DO NOT have common sense, you can forget about cooking. It is especially important to use common sense when cooking, in fact, it is essential in everything you do in life! As somebody who have had extremely little cooking experience, I've been cooking with a lot of instincts, common sense and passion. It's a lot of fun to figure out how to cook my dishes on the spot and a challenge to think of new dishes to cook. Cooking is becoming more of an interest to me because I'm able to try out new stuff (and I LOVE to get my hands on new things).
Preparation is one of the most tedious part of cooking.
15 September 2014 (Day 14) - Yesterday's / Beginning of Week 2
And today, I got back my German test results, giving myself a pat on the back! Kinda feeling the Monday blues today, but it isn't exactly Monday blues because I just didn't have enough sleep the night before which made me feel tired. Over here, I don't really feel the Monday blues nor the TGIFs because I'm enjoying myself everyday!!
