Singapore's 50th Birthday

Hey y'all! It has been awhile since I've touched this space. But fret not, I'll be updating my blog a little more often than before! (and yes, gonna start working on my EU adventures.)

Now... Don't worry, you have my word on that because I'm currently on 'holiday' before kick-starting a new phase of life – University. This is the reason why I've stopped working for the moment to take a breather and prepare for camps / freshmen orientation. If you were wondering, yes, I have been a workaholic ever since I returned from EU (to recoup my expenses, that's 1/2 a year worth of expenditure *jesus*). Taking up whichever job offers were available, my day-to-day activities comprised of work and more work. The jobs included event-related, F&B part-time job and office temporary-position jobs. Although work took away 3/4 of my life, I am never the kinda girl who works all day with no play so I filled in the available days with outings and fun (you name it). All in all, I have been pretty much occupied; absolutely busy but satisfied with life.

I would be more than happy to talk and reflect about my life here; manage it just like an online diary however I just can't keep up when I already have so much going on. Oh, how great it would be, if I were a freelance writer, that way, it could give me a greater excuse to spare more of my time to blog. Unfortunately, I'm only blogging as a hobby so it's inevitable for me to commit precious time into living my life than merely keeping memories on this page... BUT the good news is that I am giving my all in keeping this space alive so stick with me ya?! :-D

No more excuses for me as I will be starting my room makeover in a bit and sorting out my pictures for the EU posts. (schedule sure is hella packed with all the camps)

Back to the topic! National Day is coming up real soon and it is evident that this year is not just ANY National Day where Singapore celebrates its birthday. Singapore will be turning 50 years old this year; our 50th year of independence! There have been so many perks and events (prestigious & meaningful) prepared for us and STILL more to come, it almost feels like it's Singapore's birthday all year round!!! Celebrations have already taken place as early as January, when the year, 2015 began.

I was lucky to be able to chance upon an event job back in late January, where I took part in "Bishan North Celebrates SG50", both behind-the-scene jobs and executing the event itself.

A few days before the actual event started, I helped to pack goodie bags! In the short clip above, you can see the pile of packet sweets stacked in front of me while I was having my lunch break.

Hours before the event started, we helped to set up the game booths, carry and move goodie bags, mineral water, game materials and umbrellas. Moving the huge cartons of packed goodie bags and umbrellas from the stock room to the event venue was the toughest part of the job. The boxes were heavy and it was quite a distance. Even though we had trolleys to help us at times, it was still not easy. After moving everything at last, we settled down for lunch break, had a briefing and got comfortable with our own game station booth as well as the other booths.

The next most difficult part of the job was having to distribute the complimentary umbrellas to residents who were going to take part in the formation of the SG50 logo (using the white & red umbrellas). It was a chaos due to the crowd and some impatient behaviour from the people. Of course, there were obstacles where we faced many who attempted to claim the umbrellas without staying throughout the event. We all felt a little nasty, after having to deal with some rude and unreasonable civilians.

P.S. I'm not very patriotic.......

Thankfully, our mood lightened up after the formation of the SG50 logo.

Ooh ooh, plus!! We even got to meet our Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong. (spot him if you can)

It was a lot of fun being a station master! An enjoyable experience of working with a bunch of fun people, playing along together while at the same time working and cheering for the children and residents at the game booths. I felt like at that moment, we were all celebrating SG50 as one.

What made us extremely happy (working) youths was that we got to bring back 'leftovers'. We were able to own all these childhood games and even enjoy old-time snacks – what rare treasures don't you think?

I'm sure my acquaintances, whom I now call them FRIENDS, and me, duh, are really pleased to work for one of these many SG50 events. Though the pay was not a 'wow' factor, there were many more intangible experiences gained, that money cannot satisfy.

Well, lucky you, if you have gotten your hands on this year's NDP tickets! I was pretty down when I realised I wouldn't be able to watch the big SG50 parade but I'll find my way to enjoy Singapore's 50th birthday and not to forget, the long weekends too. I hope you do too, for those who did not manage to get the tickets. Wishing my Malay friends in advance, Selamat Hari Raya!
Till next time. ;-)
